    Testing Procedure (Method of analysis) for Antimony, Arsenic and Barium Salts

    Learn how to test the Antimony, Arsenic and Barium Salts in Pharmaceutical ingredients.

    Antimony Compounds

    Dissolve with gently heating about 10 mg of the substance under examination in a solution of 0.5 g of sodium potassium tartrate in 10 ml of water and allow to cool. To 2 ml of this solution or to 2 ml of the prescribed solution add sodium sulfide solution dropwise; a reddish orange precipitate which dissolves by adding dilute sodium hydroxide solution is produced.

    Arsenic Compounds

    Heat 5 ml of the prescribed solution on a water-bath with an equal volume of hypophosphorous reagent; a brown precipitate is formed.

    Barium Salts

    A. Barium salts impart a yellowish green color to a nonluminous flame which appears blue when viewed through a green glass.

    B. Dissolve 20 mg of the substance under examination in 5 ml of dilute hydrochloric acid and add 2 ml of dilute sulphuric acid; a white precipitate, insoluble in nitric acid, is formed.
