Preparation and Standardization of 0.1 M Sodium Nitrite

Preparation and standardisation of 0.1 M Sodium Nitrite using Sulphanilamide used or pharmaceutical analysis of raw material.

Sodium Nitrite Solution Preparation

  • Dissolve 7.5 g of sodium nitrite in 800 ml of purified water.
  • Makeup with purified water to produce 1000 ml.
  • Standardize the solution in the following manner.

Sodium Nitrite Solution Standardization

  • Dissolve 0.3 g of Sulphanilamide in 50 ml of 2 M hydrochloric acid.
  • Add 3 g of potassium bromide, cool in ice and titrate with the sodium nitrite solution determining the end-point potentiometrically.
  • 1 ml of 0.1 M sodium nitrite is equivalent to 0.01722 g of Sulphanilamide.
  • Calculate the molarity of solution by the following formula:
       Sulphanilamide in mg
M = -------------------------------
       NaNO2 in ml x 17.22
