Preparation and Standardization of 0.1 M Ammonium Thiocyanate

Preparation and standardisation of 0.1 M Ammonium Thiocyanate solution using silver nitrate and Ferric Ammonium Sulphate solution as indicator used in chemical analysis of pharmaceutical ingredients.

Ammonium Thiocyanate Solution Preparation

  • Dissolve 7.612 g of ammonium thiocyanate in sufficient water to produce 1000 ml.
  • Standardize the solution in the following manner.

Ammonium Thiocyanate Solution Standardization

  • Pipette out 30.0 ml of 0.1 M silver nitrate into a glass-stoppered flask and dilute with 50 ml of water.
  • Add 2 ml of nitric acid and 2 ml of ferric ammonium sulfate solution.
  • Titrate with the ammonium thiocyanate solution to the first appearance of a red-brown color.
Calculation

            Volume of AgNO3 x Normality of AgNO3
M= -----------------------------------------------------------------
                        Volume of NH4SCN
